Biographical Text

Ed and Toni King are North Dakota Natives who have lived most of their lives in Dickinson. Ed started work in the grocery business after graduating from Dickinson High school. Toni Holubok King graduated from Model High school in 1935 and then attended Dickinson state Teachers college. After she received her teaching certificate, she taught in the Dickinson region.

In 1941, the Kings purchased and managed King’s supermarket in Dickinson. A new, modern shopping complex opened in 1961, built around the supermarket, known today as King’s shopping Plaza. The Kings sold the supermarket in 1979.

The Ed and Toni King Scholarship was established in 1988. They are long-time supporters of the Athletic scholarship Fund. The total of their gifts, including King Pavilion, surpassed those of all other living donors at the time of their gift for the erection of the Pavilion. The pavilion was built with funds given to the college by the Kings in 1997. It is a multi-use pavilion and is the center piece of the front campus. It has been the site of various special events, such as concerts, weddings, and other informal social activities. Its use is particularly appropriate during the Arts Roundup, held on campus during Rough Rider Days over the 4th of July.

When he announced the receipt of the gift. Dr. Conn said "The Kings have a strong interest in the attractiveness and ambiance of the University campus and the community of Dickinson. In designating the purpose for this grand gift, they emphasized their eagerness to help in creating a gathering place where students, alumni. University employees, and other towns people can interact in a beautiful and pleasant setting." In June of 1989 the Kings were honored with the Meritorious Service Award in recognition of their contributions to the University and the Community. The Kings were also honored by the Alumni Association with the Blue Feather Award in 2000.
